| [Online] New column: Why We Game by Richard Tucholka John Reiher 00:56:00 |
| | My good friend, Richard Tucholka, wrote a guest column about why people play RPGs and other games: Why We Game. I first met Richard Tucholka about 20 years ago at an Order of Liebowitz game night at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. There I really learned the craft of being a GM under his tutelage.
And there was being part of the crew of the ISCO Santa Barbara, exploring the different worlds of the Time Bagel, (Which later became the basis for Fringeworthy.) and being exposed to women gamers. At that time, the male to female ratio at the Sunday night game at the Order of Liebowitz was about 3 males to 1 female, unheard of at that time (1977).
So read his words of wisdom, and hopefully come away a little bit wiser.

| Online Witchcraft RPG Kitten Koder 06:56:02 |
| | http://rpgcn.com/witchcraft Online community style tabletop like chat game. Play for free, the corebook is offered for free from the publishers, all you need to play. Make a character or find other Witchcraft fans and just chat. Play in the perpetual story line of Witchcraft in Seattle. Small Java chat client on a secure server.
Extended: This is played much like a table top game, though it's all processed through the net so you can play from anywhere at any time. It will always be free, even the game book you need to start is free, and someday other games will be added to the network. For those who have played the old White Wolf chats this will be familiar to you, genre and style. Those new to table top gaming over the net it's easy to learn and get use to. I am on a lot, and my moderators will always be helpful. Everyone who plays will most likely help out new players find their way through it, so just stop by, all you have to lose is a few minutes to find out if you like it.
The Witchcraft genre is a modern day myth and magic genre with a lot of dark horror and fantasy mixed in. The primary enemies are the mad gods who wish to conquer or destroy the world, only those sensitive to magic and a few of their allies stand between these dark beings and the salvation of humanity. This is a prequel to Armageddon (the game of the same publisher) which will eventually be added. Also anyone familiar with All Flesh Must Be Eaten are welcome to play.

| [SR] Contacts and getting players to use them Gurth 15:15:01 |
| | My group rarely uses their contacts. For some reason they don't really see the value of contacts in gathering information, even after me repeatedly telling them about how contacts can and often do know stuff about whatever it is they're investigating. The two exceptions are fixers and deckers -- it seems they are under the impression that these two combined can get them any information they need.
At our last game session, they were getting stuck (again, as usual) and coming up with ever wilder plans to get information -- which usually involve breaking in somewhere and kidnapping someone who may know. This often eventually gets them somewhere because I don't want them to get hopelessly stuck (which tends to lead to players not liking the game anymore, in my experience) but I don't like the message it gives them ... Namely that you can kidnap and interrogate people _and_ get results. Sometime soon, somebody is going to try and get revenge, I think ...
Now, I've told them to use their contacts before, but they always look over their list of contacts and decide that nobody except a decker and/or fixer is likely to know anything ... Like last session:
Me: "Who are you looking for again?" Player: "That Nick guy." Me: "An elf on a bike. What would that quite possibly make Nick?" Player: "A bike ganger, I suppose?" Me: "And do you have any contacts who might know something about bike gangers?" Player: "Well, I have a fixer, but you're telling us not to rely on him too much, a smuggler, a decker to which the same applies, a medical doctor, a prostitute, a troubleshooter, and there's a street samurai ... I don't see how any of them would know something about this Nick." Me: *sigh* "That prostitute might have heard of him, and so could the street sam." Player: "Yeah, but given the size of Seattle, what's the chance that she happens to actually know Nick?!"
At which point I realized they are suffering from a fundamental misunderstanding many players seem to have: that there first needs to be an explanation, and only then do you make a dice roll. Whereas IMHO, you can often roll the dice first and then find explanations based on the roll. Say you rolled crap: the prostitute obviously didn't know the biker. But what if you happen to roll four or five successes? She obviously knows him, maybe he's even a friend of hers.
I'm hoping the message got through, but in case it didn't, does anyone have any other tips?

Anyone seen WOTC's latest addition to the v4 ruleset? If so, thoughts? Well, at a fairly brief look through; it's an empty, lifeless, husk of thing, at least compared to the 3.0 FRCS. Some new plot hooks, a little 1st level adventure, and a bunch of stuff that basically ruins any hope of using the detailed and inspiring older material with it.
That new format of only keeping a tiny number of words on each page, with a reduced page count, and bigger art, and so on; it's not what you need in a world with the rich history of the Realms.
It's not just the game style they've thrown away.

| Who did not bother to switch to 4E, and why? Malachias Invictus 18:02:39 |

I did not, because the system seems to play more like a metagamed tactical miniatures romp with serious playtesting issues. There are other reasons, to be sure, but little things like "the Fighter's soft shoe dance auto-dispels the Paladin's Divine Challenge" bother the Hell out of me.

It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishment the scroll, I am the Master of my fate: I am the Captain of my soul.
