| WARNING: Newsgroup overload limit reached Andrew MacPherson 21:40:47 |
| | The flight-sim group monitoring service is currently reporting localised overloading. After further investigation, we apologise for the recent spamming of this group by a group of posters claiming to have some interest in what we believe used to be called a 'military flight simulation'.
For younger viewers, a 'flight simulation' is a now largely defunct type of software dedicated to allowing a certain type of hominid (homo cockpiticus) to geek themselves to death with a firm grip on a joystick and loose grip on reality.
The military sub-genre took this a stage further, allowing users to carpet bomb vast swathes of RAM in the 256,000-2048,000 address range, and dogfight with elite computer controlled pixels up there in the top left of the monitor in between the splashes of coffee and caked on bits of cornflake.
Fortunately this sub-genre of homo sedentari is thought to be dying out, mainly due to x-ray radiation from huge CRTs in the 80s and 90s, which affected fertility greatly... though not nearly as much as being interested in flight sims in the first place. Homo flowerarrangicus popsprogii wasn't usually too impressed by that.
Normal service will soon be resumed as soon as unfounded enthusiasm for a DX8 sim pretending to have been updated subsides. We thank you for your patience.
Andrew McP... posting from the iRacing home for bewildered geeks
PS Yes, of course I'll buy Black Shark is they ever get around to a western release. But I'm only expecting to do a bit of gentle flying around enjoying the flight model. It is, after all, just a fancy patch for Lock On when all's said and done. Most of the sim engine is still intact and unaltered, whatever they might say.

| X3: Terran Conflict Memnoch 00:41:46 |
| | So, who is going to be buying this in October? I can't believe I will be the only one. Looking at some of the videos which are available this is going to be great, more an evolution of X3 than a revolution.
The interfact appears to have had a major overhaul, which it really needed in my opinion. It had been lurking around since X:BTF and really should have been brought up to date when X3 was released.
Look here for some videos including gameplay ones.

| Best Joystick? Pringles CheezUms 18:40:09 |
| | I'd like to get back into flight sims again, and need a joystick. I don't want to spend half my paycheck, but would like something with rudder and throttle control in addition to simple roll/pitch and weapon controls. What's the best reasonbly-priced joystick?
Thanks!

| Eagle Dynamics DCS:BlackShark (Russian Version) GOLDEN! Bcpj 22:02:03 |
| | DCS: Black Shark to be released in Russia on 17 October
Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark will be released in Russia and other CIS states through 1C Company on 17 October in both retail and digital download from the http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?lang=ru website. Details of DCS: Black Shark includes:
Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark
• DCS: Black Shark is a simulation of the Russian Ka-50 attack helicopter and is the first simulation module of the Digital Combat Simulator series by The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics.
• DCS: Black Shark can be played as the most realistic combat helicopter simulation ever created for the PC with authentic flight dynamics and systems modeling. Black Shark may also be played as a console-style arcade game for the casual gamer.
• A detailed and accurate 330,000 sq km depiction of the western Caucasus region serves as the battlefield and includes a broad array of eastern and western air, land and sea units.
• Each air, land and sea unit is accurately modeled to include detailed models, weapon systems, movement dynamics and artificial intelligence. Each bullet, rocket, shell or bomb fired is modeled in detail for accurate performance.
• Powerful and easy to use Mission and Campaign Editors are provided to allow creation of user-created missions and campaigns. Non-linear campaigns are provided with unlimited replayability.
• Multiplayer game play is provided to include both cooperative play using the Ka-50 data link and head-to-head. Multiplayer supports up to 16 players.
• A set of detailed training missions, single missions and a campaign are included.
Ka-50 “Black Shark” Features
• A highly-detailed six degrees of freedom cockpit allows you to look anywhere in the cockpit using TrackIR®.
• An unrivalled flight physics system provides the most realistic helicopter flight experience available.
• Interface with the fully 3D cockpit using a mouse with the option for an English cockpit.
• Detailed modelling and control of engine, fuel, hydraulics, electrical, navigation, radio, fire suppression, sensor, and weapon systems (casual game play modes also available).
• Advanced weapon physics for missiles, rockets and cannon rounds to include ricochets.
• Detailed simulation of the “Shkval” optical targeting system and the “Vikhr” anti-tank guided missile system that allows attacks on both ground and air units.
• Accurate emulation of both the “ABRIS” moving map navigation system and “Skosok” night vision goggles for day and night missions.
In addition to the Russian version, a single western version (DVD and download) including support for English, French, German and Spanish is currently in development. Much localization work still remains and there will be a 90-day period between when the western version is completed and submitted to the various Age Rating Authorities as required by law (ESRB for USA, PEGI for Europe (less Germany) and USK for Germany), then presented to distributers and when the game will be available for purchase. Although the game will be completed in 2008, it may not be available for purchase until early 2009.
Between now and the release of the western version, we will be releasing free content for DCS: Black Shark to include: the PDF DCS User Manual (165 pages), the PDF Ka-50 Simulation Flight Manual (400 pages), and an English-only interactive demo.
A printed, spiral-bound, extended 550 page Ka-50 flight manual will also be available for sale.
Both the retail and digital download versions of DCS: Black Shark will be using the latest version of StarForce. The DVD version will require a weekly check and the download version with have 10 activations. This decision was made only after three years of testing using well over 100 beta testers over a wide array of hardware and installed software. During these three years of intensive testing, not a single tester encountered a StarForce-related problem. We feel StarForce provides a safe and effective means of combating software piracy.
DCS: Black Shark will be available in both boxed retail versions and internet download from http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/
Sales price of the western version is to be determined.
Minimum system requirements: Windows XP, Vista; CPU P4 2GHz or AMD equivalent, RAM 2 GB; Video 256MB RAM, compatible with DirectX9; 5GB of HDD space; sound card; DVD ROM; keyboard; mouse.
Recommended system requirements: Windows XP, Vista; CPU Intel Core 2 Duo 3GHz or AMD equivalent, RAM 2 GB; Video Card with 512 MB RAM (ATI Radeon HD4850+ or nVidia GF8800+), compatible with DirectX9; 5GB of HDD space; sound card; DVD ROM; TrackIR®; keyboard, mouse, joystick.

Sure this will create controversy
I've found a dusty boxed HOTAS Cougar at a local Comp USA for $239 US.
Is it worth getting? Are the mods for it that many people seem to have still available? just curious.

I would like to upgrade from a geforce 6800GS to a faster card. I only play: Falcon AF, LOMAC and IL2 What is the fastest video card that will give me the least amount of driver problems ? I have seen so many problems with the latest Geforce 8x/9x/200x and ATI 48xx cards with the old flight games. Anyone know if the ATI 3870 is any good? Thanks I have all three of those games and they have no issues on my ATI 4870. I doubt you would have any issues with Nvidia 260 or 280 either.

| What do you think of First Eagles? James McTavish 07:51:31 |
| | I really want to like this game but I can't when your crate gets off the ground on takeoff quicker than an F16. WTF is up with that? This game is no real challenge for me and that is why it is weak IMO. Hard flight model still gets off the ground just as quick but hard flight model has some really weird things happening in it and seems less realtistic to me than the normal flight model. Rudder control on hard just causes the plane to roll and on normal it causes the plane to slide and turn which according to what I have read is how it should be in these WWI planes. Another real weak thing about it is even though I have bullet effectiveness at hard setting I can still shoot down an enemy plane with a few rounds and the plane explodes in a fireball. On a similar note, I can sink a cargo ship in Strike Fighters with a few good gun rounds too. <rolls eyes>. TK claims this is what people want. I say BS and do not buy that claim for one second. I need to learn how to tweak damage modelling in FE or else I just can't see myself playing it much at all. Waste of 60 bucks IMO.
