Who's buying Black Shark?

With the Starforce copy protection that has limited activations and is tied
to your hardware config and people saying it has poor frame rate there is no
fucking way I am buying it. How about you?

I will buy it, and so is a mate of mine. I have been following this for a
long time. I would prefer if it could run without the disc in the drive. I
hope that the package released to Europe is reminiscent of the boxed sets
you got with Microprose's Gunship etc. I don't mind paying a bit more for a
lot of bumpf included.

What are your PC specs and how well does it run?

Quad core PC with a 9600GT2 and runs 40+ fps with everything on max.

But you're not going to buy it so it's a moot point. :P

Rod.

Black Shark can't make use of mulitple cpu cores. What speed is your cpu?

Well, when we finally get a new flight sim in 2008 and it doesn't even
support multiple core cpu and has Starforce can you blame me?

Tip: don't change drivers if they work OK, it's not worth the hassle, nor
the time.

Sometimes you have no choice but to install new drivers for new games. I
suspect Starforce of damaging 2 of my optical drives. 2 optical drives
developed the exact same issue one after the other right after installing a
game with Starforce. I have the FC version of Starforce installed but that
is a non optical drive version so has given me no issues. I also expect
Starforce latest version behaves better than the early version I suspect of
messing up my drives. Thing is; are the limited installs a permanent amount
or can we email for more if we were to run out?

I think the only version you will be able to get is the download version.

Care to explain how a software package could damage an optical drive?!

Missed this bit.

Considering flight sims are rare as hens teeth you've got the choice
of not installing it or enjoying an exceptional helo sim.

Your call.

Rod.

By altering the drive's firmware?

For me there is 2 reasons why I won't buy DCS: Black Shark.

1. Since they decided to go to bed with NP and discriminate old
TrackIR 1 and TrackIR 2 users (i.e you need to buy a new TrackIR 4
from NP for it to work at all).

2. Don't really like StarForce but could live with it until I heard
that the upcoming English DVD-version will have StarForce + limited
on-line activations as well.

To bad since I was looking forward to a realistic helicopter simulator
and I wish ED/TFC all the best but can't really understand why they do
things like they do...

Fair point but highly unlikely.

I believe you can you freetrack. I have a TIR3 but haven't gotten
around to hooking it back up.

Starforce installs drivers that detect CD/DVD writers.
(I had a PC with two DVD Writers and had to dump one for a reader)

under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading
or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps
the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit
compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually
unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot
cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware
failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives).
A sure sign of this step down occurring is that the burn
speeds will get slower and slower (no matter what speed
you select to burn at). Starforce, on a regular basis, triggers
this silent step down. Until it reaches the latter stages most
people do not even realise it is happening.

It has been reported by many users that the slowdown
caused by StarForce on some recent multiformat DVD writers
can cause irreversible hardware failures on those drives
(they aren't recognized anymore)

"Starforce" deny all of this :
