IDE hard-drive into new SATA controller Guest 22:32:10
I just bought a Dell which came with a SATA hard-drive. I want to put
my old IDE hard drive into it as a secondary drive, but the connections
don't match. Do I need to get a simple IDE-SATA converter (like the one
at http://www.computervideogear.com/sata/serial-ata-ide-converter.htm)
and just plug it in, or are things more complicated than that? Thanks

How do I delete GPT partition within Windows XP? Xfile 02:41:15
 Hi,

I just mounted a spared HDD and found it's under "GPT partition" for unknown
reasons.

Is there a way that I can repartition and/or format the drive because all
options for doing so from within Windows are grayed out.

Many thanks in advance.

Recently my emachine T2885 xp based system stoped working. While I dig up the
cash to repair it I have temporarily removed the hard drive and installed it
in my Me based pentium 3 Gateway as a slave. I did this to transfer my
important file to continue my work. All went will, but when I went into

Two Monitors Problems Farhan 00:38:09
I am having two different problems with two different monitors.

1- Philips 7CM5299/89T
A shiny line appears at the bottom (where the task bar is) of the screen.
Sometimes a tap on the monitor clears it but it comes back after some time.
Sometimes it comes quite frequently and sometimes it takes time to
(re)appear.

2- DELL D1028LR
I recently purchased this (used) monitor. It was working fine for month or
so. But for last 4/5 days its screen gets bigger (about 5%) and than slowly
comes back to its position. At the time of the problem, picture goes some
what black, colors increased. Is heat the cause as it is about 45C here. I
also use TV Tuner which worked fine for last five years on above (Philips)
computer.

DNS Hardwired on Host Table Ladonna i 00:54:01
I assume that is the problem anyway. My computer refuses to change the DNS
of a website that has changed servers. I have checked and it isn't a browser
problem. I've also talked with my old and new webhost and both are telling
me it is my computers problem. At any rate, emptying caches (including the
DNS caches) does no good. When I ping the site I still get the old DNS. I
know it has changed and others are going to the new location (the site was
changed sugnificantly so it is obvious that they have the new site at the new
location). I haven't a clue how to get to my host table but that is the only
place I can think of to look.
Help.

I want to reinstall Device Manager itself (WinME) Chipmonk 09:23:56
 Hello,

Many months ago I lost use of my sound card (Device Manager shows the yellow
exclamation mark). I also found that everytime I boot up, my USB mouse won't
work unless I remove it from Device Manager, then unplug and re-insert it.
Also SCSI controllers have yellow exclamation marks and can no longer be
used. Unfortunately I don't have a restore point to go back to, and
reinstalling Windows ME is not an option for me.

I know it's not a problem with the hardware, because it's a dual-boot system
and under the WindowsXP disk everything works fine.

I also know it's not a problem with individual drivers being corrupted,
because even new devices I install also appear with yellow exclamation marks
(including a software based virtual CD drive).

It seems the system files behind Device Manager may themselves be corrupted.

I work in tech support for a cable ISP and find it very common for Win98/ME
customers to lose the ability to connect their modems via USB, so I'm a
little bit familiar with this type of issue (one of the very few problems we
don't have a solution for).

So I would like to try restoring the systems files responsible for Device
Manager, using the MSConfig "Extract File" facility. Can anyone suggest a
list of appropriate files to restore, or point me in the right direction for
locating such a list?

Thanks.

Hard Drive Russ 23:48:53
 Hi,

I have an HP computer running with a Pentium III at 997MHz and 1gig of Ram.
The 40gig hard drive has gone south. The system said that the Master Boot
Track or the FAT has some type of problem, NOT sure which one is the problem.
I changed the drive out with a 14gig from another machine and this drive is
working OK.

My ??s are:

1. How do I fix the FAT or Boot problems?
2. Can I reinstall the drive as the second hard drive ie. Drive D?
3. Is their some Freeware Software to help recover some of the files from
the bad drive?

Thanks,

Russ

Can anyone told about a software which can adjust these settings?

Re: Start up error after upgrade Fran 03:41:48
I had the very same problem with my PC. I was able to restore the system to
an earlier resore point through DOS using a Windows ME startup disk.
Unfortunately, the restore point was 2 1/2 years ago--have no idea why.
Windows is now starting up normally. I downloaded all the critical updates
without problem. But now the hard drive seems to be grinding and I cannot
get my printer reinstalled. The printer is connected to the PC with a USB
connection. When I disconnect and reconnect the PC searches for and finds
the new hardware, then searches for the printer software and then freezes up.
I have tried removing and reinstalling the software without success. I know
the PC, which is 5 yrs old, is probably dying but I'd like to do everything
possible to keep it running for at least a few more months. Any help would
be appreciated.

Gateway Win ME CD will not re-install on Gateway PC Mo 00:07:02
My hard disk has crashed and I need to replace it. However when I was trying
to find out what was wrong I tried to re-install Windows ME from the CD I
received with the PC.
I get an error - Not a Gateway PC. I think that is because of the corruption
on the disk - many bad sectors & corrupt registry.
I downloaded the OEM bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com, that allowed me to run
scandisk on about 34% of the disk but scanreg hung.
If I buy a replacement disk drive I think I will have the same installation
problem, do you have any suggestions?
Thanks

white band on screen Cody Pace 03:28:56
Recently I opened my Thinkpad 755CX, and sometime later a white band appeared in
the middle of the screen. It looks like only every other pixel is affected. Also
the band does not appear with an external CRT. An image can be found at
www.crystalbox.org/pics/lcd.jpg . If anyone has any advice it would be greatly
appreciated. If at all possible I would like to repair the laptop, even if it
takes a considerable amount of work.

Harddrive Warning Message Jco 00:18:03
On boot up, I'm getting a Text Warning Message (while still in the DOS
environment) that says my Harddrive may fail. It says to backup my date on
my slave drive due to failure that may happen. Then I have to press F1 to
continue and boot.

Specifically:
It's the drive S.M.A.R.T. system informing me that trouble is heading my
way.

So I ran Norton Disk Doctor that found nothing. I've defragged everything
with no issues.

How do I know that this message is correct?
What do I do?

Problem with D drive in Windows ME Testing 13:00:21
A friend has a strange error which I could not sort out for him. When
alternating discs in the CDRom drive, Windows Excplorer doesn't
recognise that you've gone from a music CD to a data CD and vice
versa, no matter how many times you open/close D drive, close down
Explorer etc. You have to reboot to get it to take notice! "Autostart"
is ticked for both music and data CDs, which I am told is fine. Any
ideas if it's hardware or software at fault? Thanks! Pete.
