"paranormals" <paranormals@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1140295984.963381.130700@o13g2000cwo.googlegroups.com... Hello, New member here. Just refound the addiction of pinball recently. The bug hit me bad a few weeks ago after I was up in Toledo at a Holiday Inn and they had Monster Bash. After 2 games I was hooked again and spent many hours playing. I used to play a bunch up in Bowling Green in the Early 90's but have only played a few times here and there since then. So I am interested in buying a machine but first want to spend some more time playing different machines so I know what I am looking for if possible near Dayton. So today I went on the hunt for a game or two near my home. I went to many locations around Beavercreek Ohio with no luck.. Fairfield Mall, Movie Theatres at Fairfield, Fox and Hound, Holiday Inn, Cee Cee's Pizza, BW3's, Red Robin and I found a total of NO PINS. Are there any public Pins in Beavercreek? I also went to C's Pizza (on brandt) in Huberheights.. nada. Im going to try a few other locations in the area such as Golen Cue that I hear used to have a few machines. While over there I will check out that Bowling Alley on Brandt. Any other locations in Huber? BW3s? I hear other BW3s in ohio have some pins. I tend to travel a lot and would love to know of locations for machines in Columbus and Cinci also.. especially good games in good condition or places with multiple pins. Need to feed addiciton.... mark

This Radio Shack one looks nice, and has digital readout. Plus Radio Shack is close. This Weller one looks same as Radio Shack one, but not digital. But it does have a bigger sponge..hmmmm. But it's more expensive too. What ya recommend for a beginner with crappy soldering skills? Digital is not necessary - I don't look at the analog numbers on my old weller either, I just know that I like soldering at about 'that' point on the dial (about 750).
I'm of the opinion that you solder at a higher temperature but for a shorter time period. The longer you have to use the iron to heat a joint, the more likely you will have problems IMO. (Lifted pads etc)
Boards in good shape with most joints I do at 750 (.100) - sometimes bump it up a bit to a hair under 800 for .156. Desoldering I almost always crank it up to 800-850. (This is with the vacuum solder de pullit)
I can't overemphasize tinning your tip and keeping it clean - biggest difference in soldering properly.

| WCS tech and a question John Wart 01:36:45 |
| | I got my 'project' WCS going 100% on Sunday night and after playing it for a couple days, have a question.
Is the magnasave supposed to 'swirl' around, or stop the ball dead in its tracks? Mine swirls around, then flings the ball in a random direction.
I remember my Solar Fire would do the same as my WCS is doing, and made the magnasave a 'double edged sword'
Of course, in SF the magnasave is on the outlane, potentially saving a ball from a drain. On WCS, it doesn't seem to be in a drain friendly area, instead it's right above the left flipper.
Will it really 'catch' a SDTM ball? I've had no luck yet, but my timing could be off.
I played this game a ton on route and I'm guessing the magnet was unhooked or didn't work when I was playing it, or maybe I didn't realize it was there and just never used it - it's been years! So, I have nothing to compare to.
Or, is there some other use for the magnet I just didn't figure out yet?
Did any other games use the weird GI lamp pcbs like WCS uses?
I don't care what anyone says, this is Popadiuk's best game. Most fun of them all!

| | Look at the other side. They are wired in a group, the first one has a diode, the next one that is jumpered to it - doesn't have a diode.
So if the one staying in your game has a diode, and the one you are replacing doesn't - then just cut the diode off and wire it in like the old one. LTG

Ordered a new leaf switch for my sling on a Scared Stiff. The new switch is a little different and just want to be sure it's a suitable replacement. The new switch has a diod and the old one didn't. If I can use this how do I wire it, does it mater which wire goes to either side and which end of the diod? the one with the stripe or the other end? thanks, Matt

I heard from a VERY reliable source that the new Indiana Jones game will come complete with a "Splash Effect". Apparently there is a mode where you have to navigate some river rapids and when/if you crash you are shot with water from the top of the backbox (kind of like Whirlwind but with water). the article will appear shortly... Not bad, but it doesn't qualify the "good" barrier until you get some newb to buy into the story.

So what do you guys think on IJ for the post rubber bumper color? I'm thinking about going all yellow getting rid of the black. Hugh I generally change to yellow if the shot is still ok - the yellow is slightly bigger than the black. On shadow I had to put the black back because it was affecting the ball coming out of the start mode hole. I left the yellow where it fit though (although it makes the hole shot harder.....)
You can also go red, although yellow is better for the color scheme of IJ. You are going white rubber instead of black too to brighten it up?

So, I bought an untested WPC CPU board on Ebay. Turns out to have a bad ASIC so it is pretty much worthless to me and won't fetch much being resold as bad. The auction was as described and the sale went well. Is it out of line to leave a nuetral feedback stating that the untested board was bad? The ebay lexicon is as follows-
Untested=tested, and it tested bad.
Looks good=tested, tested bad.
Sold lots of these untested, and most of them worked=tested, tested bad.
Tested bad=tested, and it was bad, and blew up other boards in the machine.
I'd leave no feedback vs. neutral - their going to neg you for leaving that with a reply saying "sold as is untested"

| Tech: SM - Doc Ock kickout Slingshot 21:59:30 |
| | I am still getting horrible bounce outs on the Doc Ock kickout hole. I've taped the black absorption foam to the back of the curved metal piece as I've seen recommended by some. Any solid shot from the left flip to the doc still bounces out - near 100% of the time. Only a backhanded shot from the right flipper stays put.
Do I have the foam in the wrong place (does not touch the wood on the back of the hole). Other suggestions?

OK, Fair enough and understood on the collector issue, it's just that I was going to buy his Whirlwind game when he was done shopping it out, now I may think differently on the matter. The solenoid test does not fire the plunger and I don't see any broken wires under the playfield so where would I look for a blown fuse for the autoplunger?
------------------------------------
When you inspect the wires to the coil for the plunger, give each wire a very light tug. The wire has memory and even disconnected it can look like it is connected to the lug.
Refer to your manual for the fuse for that solenoid.
-----------------------------
As far as the ramp goes, it goes up without a problem it's the going down that's the issue. When you run the solenoid test on the ramp up and down it will finally go down after it clicks a bunch of times. Can you lubricate the mechanism perhaps?
---------------------------------
With the power off and the playfield up, find the ramp lowering/raising assembly. The bracket that holds the switch and the solenoid, if not bent correctly, can cause the plunger to throw too far and causes the lift arm in the ramp to go too far into the wedge formed by the ramp and the arm gets stuck in there. You want to bend the bracket slightly so you do not get so much throw on the plunger and it does not go so deep. You have to bend either to the right or left--I don't remember off hand which it is. You are trying to shorten the throw of the plunger so the arm doesn't go so deep into the ramp/doesn't drive the ramp so high.
Hth.
