No - these cannot be tested this way.
The 7812K is actually a 3-legged integrated circuit ... with many internal
components.
Only way to test these is to test them in a live circuit.

Note -- this style (TO-3) of 7812 has become somewhat hard to find.
Hopefully, the one you have is ok.

If I were to remove this part...is there a way to test it ? Red on
this leg...black to the case...then switch...and you should get this
for a reading on your DMM. Something like that, you know something
simple for the electronicly challanged.
The voltage reg. in on the PS for my Volcano's Sound/Speech board
and has a metal case like a 2n5875 transistor.
Thanks,
Scott

That's not a good cross to the 7812CK but is a cross for the 7812CT.
The "T" suffix is a TO-220 package. The "K" suffix is a TO-3 package.
These will look like the LM323K voltage regulators as used in the older
Bally and Stern boards.

Thanks for the reply Ed...even if it wasn't the one I wanted to read.
I was hoping you would tell me that you had another part # for this
item on your site and that is why I couldn't find it :(
I didn't have any +12 at my Sound/Speach board, and I traced it back
to the voltage reg.. I have just over 30+ volts dc going into the one
leg, but nothing coming out of the other leg. The input leg also has
continuity with the case. I guess I'll start looking.
Do you plan on getting any Contact Extracton Tools in anytime soon?

Thanks,
Scott

The 7812K / 7812CK is a tough critter to find. Although I don't like their
packaging practices (maybe they've changed over the years) -- Jameco does
seem to have a few. Look for 7812K (LM340K-12).

I don't know when I will be restocking the 11-03-0016. Everytime I go to
buy them - they go thru another price increase. These used to be $2 each...
now are about $10 each... kinda sad for a simple piece of stamped steel.

 Whoa!
What the heck is ST-Micro doing with their part numbering?!?!
"T" suffix is typically used for TO-220 packages and "K" is typically used
for TO-3 packages.
ST trying to confuse us all -- they now use "V" for TO-220's and "K" for
TO-3's.

It looks like Steve is right -- the L7812CT is what you want. Just don't
get the LM7812CT -- that one will be the wrong package.
