They can be attached but the vibration from the trough can cause intermittent behavior - try the zip tie or simply solder the two wires together and remove that one connector to never have problems again.

switch 26 is the proximity sensor in the ball trough there is another proximity sensor in the slot machine this is the one you want to look at for your problem
