-Crawl- Trouble with Putty and online Crawling Jeremy Turner 10:51:19
I decided to try playing Crawl on the akrasiac server yesterday, so I
blew the dust off of Putty.exe and signed myself up. The first time I
tried to get my character to *move*, however, I had a problem. The numeric
keypad was doing strange things, like causing me to (e)at when I tried to
move left.
After dickering with Putty for, oh, about 9 million hours, I tried
changing the "Initial State of Numeric Keypad" option under "Application
Keypad Settings" (under "Keyboard" (under "Terminal")) from "Normal" to
"NetHack". This seemed to solve the problem, except for one thing: Shift-5
doesn't work, so I have to rest for one turn at a time. The weird thing
is, Shift-<Direction> works fine for continuous movement!
I tried reading up on Crawl's Options, but couldn't find any likely
culprits. My confusion was increased by the fact that this was my first
time playing 4.3.
Any tips to get Putty working, or should I try a different software
product?
I *really* don't want to learn to move with the letter keys...

the top row numbers to move diagonally" turner

Faulty magic objects Radomir Dopieralski 04:36:48
The idea that magic objects that spent ages in the
underground dungeons exposed to all kinds of evil auras and
magic interferences may in result degrade and become
unreliable is very appealing. The fact that there are so
many interesting ways in which magic items may "fail", from
simply doing nothing, through discharging all their charges
in one go, exploding, applying the effect on the user
instead of the monsters, having side effects, to doing a
complete opposite of what was expected, makes the temptation
even greater.

There is however a side effect to this: the game becomes
much more random and less tactical, you can be unfairly
killed by an artifact that you planned to use to save
yourself. Depending on your game, this can hurt it.

I was thinking of a different way of determining whether
a magical object should fail or not, one that is still
exciting and leads to unexpected results, but at the same
time lets you plan a little better. Potions and scrolls
are an excellent example of such a mechanic: unidentified
they are unreliable and dangerous, but once identified,
can be used in the most cunning schemes. But it's somehow
unsatisfying in case of backfiring magic items.

I began to think about various unreliable and moody everyday
objects you have to put up with: the flush handle in your
toilet that detaches if you pull it too strongly, the
operating system that requires regular reinstall, your door
lock that only works when you don't push your key all way
in, your script that deletes all your files if one of their
names starts with a minus character, etc. They don't fail
randomly. They fail in certain situations, but can be used
safely and reliably as long as you discover and remember
their quirks.

So here are some ideas for such situations:
* zapping wand in a specific direction
* using magic item with a magic ring in your hand
* while wearing cursed armor
* when hungry, confused, etc.
* when the target is too close or too far
* in the dark
* at first use
* when used more than once in a row
* when used right after another magic item
* when low on hp, when with full hp
* when low on mana/full mana
* when wielding specific kind of weapon
* when certain kind of item is in backpack

Now, item that has one of those quirks can be marked with
'unreliable' or 'suspicious', but it's up to the player to
discover how to actually use it safely. Obviously this only
makes sense for multi-use items, unless applied to whole
classes of them (e.g. all healing potions turn into poison
when consumed after booze...).

Annoyance Report (Crawl 4.3): Hall of Blades Loopy 04:10:44
Hall of Blades needs to be located prior to D:10.

I continually find it in the Vaults. By the time I am sacking the
Vaults, my character has already adopted the weapon she will use
throughout the game.

For instance, I have now a +6, +5 god-gifted Lajatang that gives me:

+3 strength
protection from fire
great protection from cold
insulation from electricity
"more stealthy" although I would prefer "stealthier".

There's nothing in Hall of Blades that can top this. If I had
encountered Hall of Blades earlier, I might have considered one of the
weapons found therein.

say, the +2/+2 Crossbow of Speed which is surely waiting right around

The Crossbow of Speed is not going to show up unless you burn your scrolls
away first. :-P Yesterday my MDBe got a dwarven battle axe gifted to him
by Trog. I decided to vorpalise it and blow all my enchant scrolls on it.

A dwarven +0/+6 executioner's axe of electrocution.

You want your regular crossbow enchanted since later in the game it is
easier to find bolts. Traps are good source and so are yaktaurs. As for
matching missile weapon / ammo it is not worth optimising for it. AFAIK
the bonus is small.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Seems there's a proof for that

XP for nuthin', magic for free Radomir Dopieralski 19:14:17
I remember somebody asking here a little bit earlier some
seemingly silly question: Why do the scrolls always have to
disappear after you read them? Why can't you just read them
over and over again for the same effect? Well, the answer
is obvious: because that's how scrolls work in roguelike
games. Duh. But I remembered this question when I was
thinking about details of the "magic" (or rather "special
effect") system for my long forgotten vapourware. Of course
I'm not going to violate the years of tradition and turn
the scrolls into permanent magic items. I'm going to invent
a new class of items for that purpose. Crazy?

Here's the deal: you have a limited number of slots. Say, in
a magic staff. You can put magic gems into those slots.
Once properly attached to your staff, you can use the gem
to cast the spell it contains any number of times without
depleting any resources. Ok, I considered making them drain
your mana or staff's charges, but then they are just fancy
spells and it's not as fun. So no cost. It's completely
free. Where is the catch? Once embedded in your staff, the
gems cannot be removed without breaking them. I suppose
that even removing them with breaking is not so easy -- you
would need some sort of, say, potion of gem removal, to dip
the gem in it, or something like that. Pretty rare,
obviously. And you lose the gem. Oh, you could just get
a new staff, even one with more slots in it -- but you can
only carry around one of them. In fact, to get the new
staff you would have to give up your old one. It probably
has to contain piece of your heart or maybe appendix,
something like that, you see, and they don't grow back.

Anyways, you can probably already guess that this basically
replaces the skill/ability system. Every gem you find can
advance your character in a certain direction, make certain
parts of the game very easy. The gems could even provide a
permanent status change or protection. The main difference
between those gems and skills is that you just find them
randomly or buy in shops (or maybe some of them are dropped
by certain monsters) instead of... gaining them through
practice, buying for experience (or acquiring after eating
certain monster corpses). Another thing is that losing them
doesn't sound so ridiculous, and in fact may be desired in
many situations.

I think that trying out various character development
techniques like this can lead to interesting discoveries
and better understanding of the more traditional
approaches.

PS. No, these are not really gems, potions and staves in my
game. It doesn't even have magic, you see. But I don't want
to spoil any fun (especially with vapourware).

No it isn't. +6, +11 ancus must be artefact. You can't vorpalise or enchant

[FA] YAWP and comments Si 16:50:15
My first FA win, character dump here:
http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=6565

The game was played entirely on my PDA - it is so nice to be able to play this
on my commute or during any other idle moments.

The whole plan for this character was to maximise her offensive, hence taking
soul siphon to keep her mana up during large battles (pit clearing etc) and then
heighten magic and channeling to increase her casting level. At CL50 she was
able to cast spells with a casting level of about 83/84. The early game was
tough with High-Elves starting at DL28 wilderness (and necros having poor
detection until later in the game) and remained hard until some time after the
first guardian, Mim, was vanquished. However once statgain has started and mana
is up and failure rates down, necros have some truly devastating spells. There
were a few close calls due to complacency more than anything, but most of the
game was then straightforward bar two horrific battles with Cantoras. The final
fight was delayed whilst I scummed for an appropriate source of chaos resist and
some !oRMs, but then Morgoth fell at the first attempt, with only 1 !o*Healing*
and 3 !oRM required.

Surprise of the Game: The Staff of Winds. I was basically carrying it as a nice
replacement for phase door scrolls. However it came into its own in the battle
against Morgoth. Being able to keep him away from me and stunned at the same
time was a real advantage.

Let down of the Game: The Necronomicon. I only found the last of the dungeon
books very late in the game and the spells were a real disappointment. Smash
Undead would have been handy against Cantoras and Vecna perhaps, but I found the
book far too late. Darkness Storm has a wide radius but the splash damage does
not seem very high for the SP cost. TA too, was too expensive compared to my
stack of wands and WoD was only useful for picking artifacts out of piles of
loot when I already have genocide and banish evil.

Top spell: Orb of Death. Did exactly what it said on the tin.

Here are my thoughts/suggestions on FA itself...

The Wilderness: In 0.2.1 I found this just a means to an end - get across it as
quickly as possible to get to the next town/dungeon. The wilderness vaults and
mountain tops/underworld added in 0.2.2 are a massive improvement (and the
Underworld is paradise for a necro with dispel evil!). During my travels I never
once saw a greater wilderness vault - are they too rare? I think more still
could and should be made of the Wilderness. If quests were added in some way to
FA, then there is massive scope with the multiple towns and massive overworld
areas. The one downside of the Wilderness that has also been mentioned elsewhere
is the incredible number of creatures populating it! Haven't they got anything
better to do?

Towns: The Travelling Merchant is a godsend - what a great idea! The town still
needs an inn where you can rest until morning without being disturbed for a
small cost - perhaps it could be a B&B so you also leave 'full'.

Zephyr Hounds: They are everywhere! Any chance of decreasing their numbers?

Nan Dungortheb: Because of where this is located, I had already defeated Sauron
before I got here. Therefore I had 30 levels of attempting to teleport to near
the bottom edge just to get to DL70 and kill Ungoliant. Perhaps there could be a
dangerous shortcut to the bottom or the dungeon be shortened?

Jewelry: The lack of the Elven rings leaves a bit of a hole in this department
which has not fully been plugged by the improvements to the Necklace of the
Dwarves. I would suggest that adding randart jewelry (as done in ToME) would be
a good idea and give more options for eq choice.

Guardians: It would be nice if there were some reward for killing each guardian
rather than just the specialities for the first two - perhaps a guaranteed
randart drop from the others?

Races: Dark Elves have a big penalty to rLight and it seems to me they should
get intrinsic rDark. At the moment, I can't see past High Elves for Int based
characters otherwise.

Overall I think FA is a great variant. Well done Nick.

David Ploog on IRDC2008 Radomir Dopieralski 11:51:40
Sorry for the delay, David Ploog's presentation is
now uploaded to http://sheep.art.pl/misc/irdc/

I will add the remaining videos from the second day
in a few days.

The ending of that video is corrupted, and then the
discussion is cut off in half -- we had some technical
problems. Well, in fact, the Cabal can't let you know
everything, you see.

Agnes in Crawl 4.3 is racist Loopy 01:33:37
I was fighting her in the Vaults when she cried, "Die, beast!"

I think she just said that because I happen to be a Minotaur.

Would she have said it if I were human? I think not.

Anyway, I killed her so I guess that settles that.

Take advantage of insubordinate monsters Loopy 05:27:19
If you're in a hallway, and a weak monster refuses to get out of the
way and let a stronger monster hack at you, that's a golden
opportunity. Don't kill the weaker monster... instead, take your time
to heal yourself, recover magic, send text messages to your Mom, check
your email etc.

One question I have, why are there 2 lists for Vanquished Monsters..
(orcs listed twice)
Vanquished Creatures
34 orcs
Vanquished Creatures (others)
15 orcs (D:8)

The latter list is for creatures that died without your direct intervenion.
This includes traps, spell miscast effects that hurt monsters, dodged
missiles that happen to hit a monster's buddy, enemy area spells ...

Re: Town generators Jakub Debski 11:55:28
konijn_ has brought this to us :
I suck at town generators, does anybody know of a game with nice town
generators of smallish size ( like 40 on 30 ) or so ? I dont need the
code per se, just see what the generator can generate would already be
nice.

Sourceforge: RoguelikeLib.

BTW: I recommend looking at:

Crawl_SS: YASD: Too Pius? zachary Kline 01:40:09
 Hi All,
This is my farthest game of Crawl thus far. While it may not be
spectacular, I felt I might post about it anyway for the fun of it.

He was an ugly young troll, and not without prospects, therefore it was
heartbreaking to his mother that he should enter into a quest for the
Orb of Zot, a long and dangerous journey, with a notoriously violent and
bloody disposition.
When he died, it was not in battle as his mother might have expected,
but of starvation. That was not so long ago.

I couldn't resist that. I neglected to mention that the starvation was
my own fault: I was too devoted to sacrificing corpses, offering almost
every one I could to Trog. I forgot that I could eat raw meat, until it
was too late: and by then no corpses were to be found. Here's the dump

Hi,
I've been thinking about xp curves in the sense that in a lot of
games, some character levels need too much xp and boredom or a sense
of stagnation takes over. I've tried to come up with an ideal curve or
even with a theory on how to create the ideal xp curve, I am came up
with nada.
Do you have deep thoughts, or links to deep thoughts with regards to
xp curves ?

Well, I have thoughts: I don't know if they're deep.

I think you need to think first about a question: In terms of
game design, what are your levels for?

Character levels serve a lot of different purposes in different
games. They may "open" game levels preventing the player from
skipping ahead. In many games, food shortages "close" game levels
forcing a character to continue; thus the complement of levels and
food availability can enforce a somewhat consistent pace through
a fairly well-understood sequence of the game areas. If you're
using levels like that, you need to be very careful about the
relationship between experience-per-character-level and food-
available-per-game-area, otherwise you can make the game unwinnable.

Character levels may also "reward" a player to keep the player's
interest up. But the boredom/grind feeling sets in pretty fast
in that case. More hitpoints, yawn, more accurate with weapon,
yawn, more damage, yadda yadda. If the player is doing exactly
the same things he did before, the player will still be bored.

What you really need to keep a player interested is new experiences.
Fortunately, Character Levels also mediate new experiences; a
player reaches a given level, has an ability he didn't have before,
and has new experiences as he learns to use it, applies it, and
exploits it. Most players find this rewarding.

Character levels may "reward" a player for playing in-conception
to the player's chosen class. In this case thieves get experience
for money, warriors for killing, rangers for area explored, etc.

When you know why your game needs levels, you should know how fast
characters should be able to earn them and how much difference in
power they should make.
