Sorry for the rather generic topic, but it seems kinda slow in the group today.
What's the most unusual Computer RPG you've played? I'm looking for something a little different, and could use some suggestions.
Outside of ATITD, which is arguably not an RPG and a game I prothelize to the point of annoyance...
I'd have to say Gothic. Sure, the balancing was all wrong and it had plenty of other faults, but the size and liveliness of the world was amazing. The story was a little different, too; just a guy trying to deliver a letter. For me, it was about as open a game can be and still be interesting. And it came out in '01?
Ok, so it's not all that original, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head. Maybe the early Elder Scrolls, but I'm sure there are plenty of other games you fine folks can remind me of.

The stock answer would be Planescape: Torment, which uses all of the D&D mechanisms but could conceivably be completed without ever entering combat. When your most important stat is your intelligence and not your dexterity, that's unusual in a good way.
As far as games off the beaten path go, what comes to my mind first it Martian Dreams, the second Worlds of Ultima game. It's not exactly a ground-breaking RPG, but using familiar gameplay concepts in a setting other than Tolkein-esque fantasy is always a plus in my book.

Its not a major game but I had alot of fun playing Rising Star. Its a "start your own band" music business type of game. I got a kick out of building bands (name, outfits, genre, song titles, etc) around specific themes.
I also tend to play Dominions 3 as an RPG. Its a strategy game where you create a god and try to lead your people to take out other "pretender" gods. Its lasted for years on my computer.
I also got a nice surprise playing City of Heroes (the MMORPG)

PST or Fallout when it first came out. Played nothing like either of them up to that point (or since), not counting FO2 obviously, nor do I ever hope to again *sigh*.

Aw, how sad...........
Pity this poor old man with his wheelchair stuck in the mud.
Hey, I'm just being nostalgic & mostly realistic (with a healthy dose of cynicism). If we're talking pigheaded & set in our ways, you have me beat on several counts there ;-p

Wizardry IV...where you play the bad guy from Wizardry I...groundbreaking and very very hard Never got all seven endings and I had time to play in those days
I also thought Entomorph was a very unusual game. My character
turned into a bug. Pretty strange. LOL
A cool bug like a dragonfly or something? Would suck to get turned
into a dung beetle or something. :\
That does sound like an unusual game.
Heh, one could say GW was highly unusual when it came out, as it broke a lot of mmo moulds. All sorts of polymorphing & shape-shifting in it as well (certainly in Nightfall).
But it is perhaps the most unusual mmo for the reason that I'm yet to come across a single game-breaking bug of any kind after 3+ years & not one single CTD/lockup. And it's the most solid, well-programmed game with the best bang-for-buck graphics bar none, to this day, imo.

I think it was more like a mosquito thing or something like that. I don't really remember the game much but it was fun and it was different and I turned into a bug. LOL I think I gave the game to my nephew. Maybe I should borrow it back and play it again some time.

How about Bad Mojo? You play a human turned into a cockroach trying to navigate your way thru a nasty apartment to find a magic medallion to turn yourself back into a human. -- Michael Cecil Now filtering Google Groups, OE and Idiots http://macecil.googlepages.com/index.htm
Hmm... yah, well. I don't a have any problem with the Games for Windows program, except maybe in this case. The big blue/white Games for Windows logo stripe across the top of the collectors edition box doesn't really go well with the rest of the art work. Compare the Windows version with the PlayStation 3 version:
