| | I'm not sure what group to post this to since this game defies categorization but one thing is certain: it's one the the most amazing games I've played in years.
It's also gorgeous, beautifully scored, inventive, fun and addictive - in short, the reason why I play video games. Thank you Kyle and Ron from the bottom of my heart, you guys are beyond genius.
There's a PC demo version out, get it and see for yourself.

| Rise of Nations, I'm starved for gold Peter Knutsen 08:52:55 |
| | I've played a bunch of RoN, first the demo, then the expansion demo, then a few months ago I bought the Gold version of the game.
It's a great game, but I find myself having too little gold all the time. Not enough to buy Merchants to exploit ressources, and buy Scholars to work in the Universities, and the various tech upgrades (at least not as early as I'd like to).
I think part of the problem, if not much of the problem, is that in other RTS games like Age of Empires II or Warcraft II, gold is a mine-able ressource, and if I need more gold, I just put more villagers/peons on gold mining.
Not so in RoN. I have to *generate* gold, via trade.
I do a lot already, I think, but it still isn't enough. I build Markets in all my towns, and I create new towns fairly agressively. I also build Caravans, although I let them manage themselves in terms of trade routes (is that a mistake?).
Finally, I build spare Merchants and always have one tied on a hotkey (F4, usually) if I find a ressource (because some of those ressources generate gold), and I also make a bunch of Explorers so that I can find more ressources. I set the one I start with on auto-explore, and then pretty early in the game I build 2 or (recently) 3 more and set them to auto-explore too.
On maps with an ocean surrounding the continent, I can generate a bunch more gold by exploiting fish ressources. I don't find myself quite so starved for gold on such maps, but recently I've been playing on "Old World" maps where there's no ocean, and that starves me for gold. Also even on the maps with lakes on them, it's a hassle having to "colonize" each lake with a Harbour.
I'm thinking the only thing I can do, that I'm not doing already, is to sell off a little of my Food and Wood, once in a while. That's something I've practically never done in other RTS games, because I tend to generate an equal/balanced amount of all ressources, and so I've never "learned" to use the Market for buying and selling.
So I'll be trying that, trying to use the Market to "translate" a little spare food and wood (and metal if I have excess) into gold.
But apart from that, is there anything else I can do? Something I've overlooked?

| Colonization - severe disappointment David T . Bilek 02:16:16 |
| | I don't know what happened to Sid Meier, but he seems to have lost his touch for everything not named "Civilization". I really, really wanted to like Colonization. And indeed, after an hour of play I thought it was a winner. But it's as shallow as a wading pool and the flaws really show up once you learn how the game mechanics work.
It's horribly unbalanced. Most of the game turns out to be completely optional. It actually hinders your ability to win to play the way I assumed you were supposed to play; by establishing a vibrant working economy of goods production. Instead, the best way to win is to build one or two small colonies, buy a bunch of cannon, and then slap elder statesmen into your one or two colonies and declare independence when your rebel sentiment shoots from 0% to 50% in 8 turns or whatever. If you build enough cities to get big economy going in order to get lots of money and build guns and such, you've screwed yourself because it will take so long to get rebel sentiment to 50% that the Royal Expeditionary Force will be huge. Why face 150 soldiers and 40 cannon when you can face 8 soldiers and 7 cannon?
Of course it must be said that a huge REF doesn't necessarily matter because combat is just awful. You can defeat virtually any force by allowing them to capture your city and then immediately counterattacking with a couple cannon. Since they don't get defensive bonuses and your cannon get +100% city attack it is an absolute massacre. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Oh, but actually you CAN get rebel sentiment to 50% fast even with a big economy; by deliberately killing all your colonists when it's time to go for it. Yes, if you butcher your own people you can get sentiment to 50% in, again, a couple turns. So if you feel like building an economy - as I said, you don't have to and it is actually counterproductive - make sure to genocide your own people before generating liberty bells! Yay, killing!
There is an engine here but not much game. It's possible someone will fix it in a mod. I hope so, because this game was clearly tested by a drunken monkey. And a stupid monkey at that.

| Colonization redux Joseph Nebus 19:26:48 |
| | Huh. It turns out they've spun off the Civilization IV engine to make a new version of Colonization: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_IV:_Colonization with the plan for a Mac OS X version.
I did like the original and I'm certainly in the market for an updated version. It strikes me as kind of nuts to have just a four colonial powers, like in the original game, though. At a minimum the Portugese and Swedes deserve their chances, and there's other footnotes which could have been made playable yet challenging nations (eg, the Swiss).
I hope the economic model is something exciting, although I admit my standard for that is Victoria.

No, and this statement
" A return to the action-packed roots of the 4X genre with some new twists, including a 3D starmap and real-time combat resolution in a 3D environment! "
Both amuses and disgusts me.
I mean, I never realized that the roots of the 4x genre was "action packed".
And a 3D starmap is not quite standard, but not exactly a new twist. Ascendency had that about 10 years ago. And "real-time combat resolution in a 3D environment!" is a bug, not a feature. I mean, either it turns it into an action game, like the Star Fleet command series, or it is something you just watch, like moo3. Neither is really great for a 4x game, IMHO.

| could not run games after re-installing OS Zhang Weiwu 06:33:44 |
| | Not sure if I can post user support on this group.. but anyway, if this is OT please redirect me to the appropriate group.
Last year I installed Mac OS 10.3 on my 4-year-old iBook/G3 (in the first 3 years I only used Linux on it). Two months ago I installed several games on my Mac OS 10.3. I enjoy them very much. They are Commandos 3, War Craft Frozen Crown and Halo Combat Involved.
Last week I wiped out my harddisk, re-partition, installed Mac OS 10.4 on it and found none of the games work any more after they are successfully installed. Halo start a splash screen, and quite (usually splash screen is followed by a short movie); War Craft quite as soon as it launches; Commandos 3 quit as soon as it enters batter after user selected which stage to play.
At first I thought it's compatibility problem with 10.4. Thus I wipe out my harddisk again, re-partition and installed 10.3 which used to play these games well. Surprisingly all these games still doesn't work, and the behavior is identical to that of 10.4.
Then I did "Software Upgrade" and installed latest patches from Apple, still doesn't work (same behavior as described above).
Then I installed ATI display driver from ATI website (Radeon 7000 serial driver, for my Radeon Mobility 7500). Still doesn't work (same behavior as described above).
I was thinking, maybe, during my last year using Mac OS 10.3, I happen to have installed some magical software that used to support the games, like DirectX in Windows world.
What do you install on your Mac OS before you try a game?

Now, maybe if they turned Talisman into a single player type game, that may work.

| Colonization questions Javajeff 16:48:15 |
| | I just got this game today and played the original way back when it came out. I am remembering the gameplay, but there are a couple things I do not understand. It has been a long time.
1) There is a little arrow at the bottom of the screen that toggles units above and in the toolbar. What is it for? I assume it is for placing units inside and outside the city. If that is it, how do I use it effectively? 2) Economy. I have been selling excess raw materials at my Home Dock. The natives like finished products, but do not pay much when I take a wagon in. Is there a way to automate the sale of goods to my Home Dock like setting a trade route? How do I get the economy going? 3) Expansion. It seems like if I do not take land, someone else will. If I take land early, I spread my units out. If I pound the food in a town, I can get more units. I am curious about philosophies here.
I played my first learning game as the Dutch and found it to be hard. I killed that game now that I know somewhat what I am doing, and started as England. I have about 5 cities pretty early, and make extra units quickly as well as buy from the Home Dock. Any insight is appreciated. I never played any Civ game, and got back into PC gaming with Master of Magic and Colonization, and shortly after SMAC. I thought this was a good opportunity to try a modern SM game. Thanks.

There was an old MAC/PC game I played in 1998 (I am pretty sure it was MAC) where you would go through a lot of different levels and try to strategically place different items (the items would be limited depending on the level) in places where an object could get to the end. It has been a long time since I played it and I do not remember it all. What sort of items, and do you remember the object? From the description I thought most immediately of Lemmings, which came out in the early 90s but had at least a couple sequels, I think. (If that's not out for Flash or hand phone games it should be.)

From what I've heard about the game, I'm kinda disapointed that this new Colonization is almost exactly like the original game. The orginal game was pretty flawed, and it would've been nice to see evolved into something better, like they did with Civilization 3 and 4.

Ho's help (in Apple's help viewer) loads for half a second then switches to this annoying and utterly wrong error message. I should start compiling these sorts of errors - they really are sheer genius. What d'ya reckon? A screenshot of this and activity viewer's network graph?
Thoughts?

| Need help ID'ing a game from early 90's OhioGuy 16:44:35 |
| | I remember playing a "risk-like" strategy game in the early to mid 90's - maybe around 1994. I believe the game was from SSI, because it was in a smaller box than many games came in at the time.
The game was a top down view of a continent. You started out with several territories, and I believe you got to pick your starting territories. I seem to remember having to build some sort of factory, and then being able to build mechs. These mechs were then sent out to conquer neighboring territories. You could either focus on quickness or armor.
When there were encounters, there would be an arcade like sequence where both mechs were shooting at each other. Again, it was a top down view of a city district, or whatever. If you won, you gained the district.
It wasn't particularly deep, and didn't take a whole lot of time to win, but it was fun.
Anyone have any idea what this game was called? I'm trying to think of tracking it down and trying it on dosbox. Thanks!
