| Infantry tactics game? Peter Knutsen 08:03:12 |
| | Are there any good games about 20th century infantry tactics? I'm thinking squad/platoon-level, with emphasis on infantry and light weapons.
I've read a little about the Close Combat series, but isn't that rather old? Would it even be able to run on Windows XP on a modern computer? Are there alternatives?
I don't specifically want real-time, but I find it difficult to imagine how turn-based could work, without reducing the number of units to too few...

| Trade Empires Dimensional Traveler 21:09:08 |
| | In my "I want a game where...." thread some of you recommended 'Trade Empires'. I got my copy a few days ago and have started playing it. I want to thank those of you who recommended it. I haven't gotten very far yet but I'm enjoying it greatly. While it may not have had every detail I wanted it is a lot of fun (in that "I don't care what they want, I can't afford to build the route to bring it to them!" frustrating kind of way *grin*).
The game is old enough that all the sites I could find for it have long since died but it seems like the kind of game where there could be a lot of player-created scenarios. Does anyone know of a still live site for it that might have some?

| Looking for a game where... Dimensional Traveler 16:47:42 |
| | I'm finding myself in the mood for a game where the player is running, building up, creating an economy. Sorta like the Settlers series but a more complex economy without the cartoonish feel to the graphics and on a national or imperial scale. I like the idea of not only having to find the resources but of also having to build the transport network to move them around, build the factories to refine them, build the factories to use the refined materials, add a couple more layers after that. Advancing your nation or empire's tech would improve some industries, create new ones, make old ones obsolete. The military/combat should either be just a consumer of goods produced or be a simple sideshow to the main game. That is, the focus of the game should be on building your nation's infrastructure and economy, rather than building the infrastructure and economy just so you can build a bigger, badder military. I could live with it being turn based but I think it would be better if it was pausable continuous with the player able to control game speed. (I'd like to spend some time just watching what I've built hum along occasionally.) I want to deal with a certain level of micromanagement but the interface should ideally not make doing so unduly difficult. Report screens that link to each other and provide useful information, that actually help the player find the bottlenecks and problems in his economy, that kind of thing.
I've played Imperialism I & II, Children of The Nile, Caeser IV, one of the railroad building games, Civ I & II (of course *grin*) (don't like Civ III and see Civ IV as just more of the worst of III), most if not all of the Settlers series, a couple of the Sim Cities. What I'd like is kind of a blend of Settlers, Children of The Nile/Caeser IV and Civ II I think.
I realize this is kind of a "in my dreams" thing but I figured I'd ask. Any suggestions?

| Galciv latest offering - anyone actually played? Peter Huebner 13:56:22 |
| | Has anybody here actually gotten and played the last offering in the Galciv series? I've made it as far as Dark Avatar, and I am still playing and enjoying that, but I haven't shelled out for the newest expansion mod.
Any experiences? In particular I'd like to know what truly earthshattering novelties and improvements are contained therein. If any. Frankly, I am a bit sick of buying the 'latest and greatest' installment of a game only to find out it's barely more'n a patch with a new skin and one or two bon-bons.
B.t.w. I am kind of glad I didn't top up my Totalgaming.Net creds for this --- for some mysterious reason Stardock have not enabled buying this game for 'tokens'. I just bet a few people went 'doh'(or worse) at that. I would've.

| Tactical RPG S . Delerme 18:09:47 |
| | Hello,
I'm looking for a tactical RPG for the PC My favorite games are the "fire emblem" series (both on GBA and GC) and "gladius" (great game) on the GC I know there is the "battle for wesnoth" game for the PC, but it is more of a wargame than a tactical RPG. Could anybody recommend me a game for the PC? I really haven't found one yet.
Thanks in advance

| | Supreme Commander (Forged Alliance) no longer has fog of war. The only options are Explored and None. Probably because nobody plays with fog on. The Fog has always been counter to strategy gaming anyway. Of course it doesn't have randomized maps either since it's a strategy game.

| Settlers VI demo questions Peter Knutsen 20:30:02 |
| | There does not seem to be any documentation included in the "Settlers VI - Rise of an Empire" demo, and I'm having a problem.
Is it possible to store more than 9 units of produced goods? Things like sausages or leather jackets, which cannot be stored in the Storehouse? It seem as if once 9 units are stored in the production building (Butcher or Tanner), production ceases, but I'd like to produce a "buffer surplus" so that I have extra goods stored away, for when I expand with new buildings (yes, I ran into problems in the previous game, with suddenly everybody going on strike because I had ran out of food, so I quit that game).
I imagine it is possible to bypass the problem by building several production buildings, e.g. 2 Butchers or 2 Tanners. Would that work?
Another solution is to produce different types of goods, that is have one Hunter+Butcher pair, and then also one Farm+Bakery pair. Unfortunately, that does not lok too doable on the only non-tutorial map included with the demo, "The Arroyo". At least, north of the river (where I'm told things are relatively peaceful), there's only one source of cloth materials (wild game), although there are two sources of good (both wild game and fish).
Also, is there a way to shut down production in just a single building, rather than all buildings of the same type? Like if I have 2 Woodcutters, but I'm building up a slight surplus of wood, I might want to shut down only one of them on a long-term basis, instead of constantly shutting down and starting up wood cutting as in micromanagement. Is there an option I've overlooked? And is there a hotkey to shut down production? I find it cumbersome to have to open the Production Window and search for the specific product that I want stopped, hoping instead for the possibility of shutting down production from within the producing building.

| Bug in Heroes V: tribes of east Jr 18:45:53 |
| | Hello folks
I'm playing Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the east for the 1st time. I'm in the campaign, in the 1st mission. Halfway during the opponent's turn, the map moved to a city/camp of his. When his turn ended, I was fully zoomed in on my hero and I can't do anything: zoom out, move, click on the hero, anything. The only thing I can do is hit ESCAPE to leave the game...
Anyone had this problem? Any ideas?

, It's a very old game so I'm not sure if anyone can help but I recently went back to play UFO - Enemy Unknown (as this was the name X- Com was released as in England) on my ancient old P90 as I never completed the game 1st time around. However I've come across either a bug or maybe I'm missing something, I'm not sure. I've had my scientists doing their research and have been told to capture one of the alien leaders alive so that they can be interrogated to find where the alien HQ is. The thing is, I sent in a team and captured a leader from a base the aliens had set up on earth (which one of my aircraft detected) but when I complete the mission, I get the message 'alien dies as there is no alien containment facility.' But I do have an alien containment facility in both of my largest bases! The team that I sent out to capture the alien leader are from one of the bases that has an alien containment facility and not from one of my smaller bases that haven't, so I can't understand why I get this message. Could you help me please and tell me if I'm missing something or have I come across a bug? I would love to finish this game as I have put hours and hours of time into it and it is in my opinion, one of the all time classic computer games. I know it's looking well dated now but the gameplay still stands the test of time. I'd be grateful for any help. Isn't there some kind of an alien containment "pod" or whatever that you need ON THE SHIP ITSELF? It was that way in XCOM3 anyhow, it's been so long since I played the original. But in XCOM3 you needed to have some kind of a living alien cargo hold thing on the ship to bring them back alive. I forget what it was called. It was like a regular cargo expansion, but was for living things.

| Armaggedon Empires Nats 02:41:08 |
| | For anyone that is interested here is a great strategy game that completely passed me by until I noticed a recommendation in a magazine and took a look:
http://www.crypticcomet.com/games/AE/armageddon_empires.html
Heres the low down on its features: Turn based strategy game in a post-apocalyptic setting versus 1 to 3 AI opponents. Hexagonal maps depicting the ravaged wastes of earth circa 2345 featuring 3 map sizes ranging from normal to huge. 4 playable factions each with unique units, art and playing styles. Over 75 faction heroes lead your armies into battle. Heroes allow for larger, more effective armies and have their own special abilities that can change the tide of battle or even create new weapons and technology cards. Over 200 unique units wage battle across the savage landscape; command infantry, cyborgs, robots, powered battle armor, armor, artillery, mecha, biomecha and many more. Over 80 unique special abilities for heroes and units; abilities like multi-targeting, shock attack, double attack, fanatic, military genius and valor allow you to find exciting combos of play just like you would in a collectible card or miniatures game. Collectible card game flavor without the expense. Each hero, unit or facility is a card that can be added to your play deck. Board game mechanics. Roll a unit's attack die versus another unit's defense die and play special abilities and cards to alter the results. Assassinate enemy heroes, sabotage enemy facilities, gather intelligence through espionage and stealth, hunt down enemy heroes and hold them prisoner. Drop thermonuclear weapons on your enemies or load out your units with tactical nuke cards created by your leading technologists. Customizable game parameters allow you to select deck point values, tile point values, map size, resource rarity, specials rarity, and victory conditions Challenging goal based AI agents see the same game you do and must gather intelligence, build armies and formulate plans just like you: "No cheating."
It reminds me of those classic games you used to get in the early days of the PC when bedroom programmers came out with some really imaginative playable concepts that arent anything like the graphics intensive unabsorbing commercial games that come out today that I am sure many like me are completely sick of. It has great replayability and relies on imagination to fill in the static graphics and it really works!
Cant recommend it highly enough for anyone who likes strategy games, sci fi, wargames, cardgames, or boardgames etc. Lets hope the developers Cyptic Comet continue to produce games of this quality. The only games I know that are anything like as good are Hearts of Iron, Civ (its better), and Panzer General. It doesnt cost much and by buying it you all rewarding great developers like this rather than poring your hard earned money into stale franchise after stale franchise.
Try the demo first and I dare you not to be pulled into it.
Regards Nats
