Can you give any other examples for this kind of behaviour? I ijust ask, as neither of these games has crashed on me, but I have had the misfortune of buying buggy broken games before, STALKER, springs to mind. But then, isn't the case also with a heap of graphics cards as well, either flawed hardware or drivers.

I read your replies, the link to the child molester was particularly entertaining, it's great fun to see someone who reckons that their status in society exempts them from obeying the law like the rest of us, (well me anyway, you seem to be fond of committing libel and slander), getting taken down a peg or two. You really are a BIG STUPID HEAD. In your workplace, are you a programmer, or the janitor? I hope I don't offend you, but I only ask as you seem to be computer illiterate. I also am not, "some faceless guy on the net," I do in fact have a face, with features that enable people to recognise me as an individual distinct from other individuals. As far as your replies go about strong arms etc, well I think that you are just being childish and puerile, and cannot give a reasoned argument. Hence my earlier jibe of BIG STUPID HEAD. | The Settlers - Rise of an Empire John A. 22:09:35 |
| | I've just purchased (from Best Buy) and installed 'The Settlers - Rise of an Empire'. It was manually updated to v1.5. However, upon starting the game, the little copy protection disk cursor comes on and the I am told to "Insert the original DVD" even though it's already in the drive. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it... upon starting it, I let it autoupdate this time. Same result. Any idea why this copy protection is not working? Thanks, John

It always slips under my radar when I read the description: Real Time 3D battles with 10000 units, blah blah blah - that just does not sound like my cup of fizz. So it goes. For what it's worth, that is only one aspect of the Total War games. If you are just into empire building you can play the campaign games without ever having to control, participate in, or even watch any of the real-time battles.
In the campaign games you manage your city(ies) growth, build infrastructure (with upgrades) and armies, and defend/expand your borders. You can send spies and assassins to keep an eye on the competition, diplomats to make trade deals, alliances, or broker peace. You need to keep your peons well fed, give them sanitary living conditions, provide entertainment, and keep the peace from enemies and rebels. Religious conversions are also important, as is keeping a healthy bloodline for your royal families. In the Rome game you also have a senate to keep happy. In the Medieval game there is a Pope.
The tactical battles occur whenever armies or navies come in contact and you can choose to command them yourself or just let the AI do the work for you. If you don't ever want to command a tactical engagement you don't have to.
I pick and choose when I fight the tactical battles. Usually it is only in "close" battles where I need to have every unit perform at its best or when laying siege against a strong defender. If I can overwhelm my foe I'll usually just let the AI do it. With a good graphics card, those battles with 10,000 units is an impressive thing!
If you want 100% historical accuracy in tactical battles these are not games for the grognard. If you want a fun empire builder, then you shouldn't overlook these games.
IMO.

| Neat Victoria trick Joseph Nebus 20:41:42 |
| | I discovered that one can do some lovely tricks in Victoria: Revolutions by assigning one's army or navy as Expeditionary Forces to another power. In particular, this lets you get them off your own budget (although they suffer nasty attrition), and they can be guided around (although the power to which they're donated can cancel your orders). This offers all sorts of ways to affect conflicts without actually breaking neutrality, not to mention building up the military might (and ranking) of other powers.
You know it's an interesting 19th Century when China pops up in the Great Powers, ahead of the Italian states.

I forget exactly what happens between things like laser ii and laser iii, probably a bit smaller or a bit more punch.

| | Matrix games has 2 Harpoon games for sale. Which is better. Which has the potential of finding most opponents? A good place to post this question, beside Matrix's forums, is www.harpoonhq.com
However, be advised that, as of now, Harpoon Classic has *no* multiplayer - even if "the code for it is in the game" (after all there was a multiplayer version aeons ago on the Kesmai network). Dunno if/when it will be implemente by the programmers.

| Imperivm Romanvm? Backspace 20:25:10 |
| | I was at Walmart last night and saw a game on the shelf called 'Imperivm Romanvm'. I can't find any real info on it on the web. Even Game Rankings shows nothing for this game. Any one here have it and have opinions of it? If it is just the standard RTS fare then I am not interested in it. Thanks.

I just started a new campaign with the Chaos Space Marines. I am having an engaging battle versus the Dark Eldar. I should be winning, but for some reason my Recquisition is decreasing. I have three listening posts, upgraded all the way, but my Recquisition has dropped to +52. I looked in the Dawn of War manual over the Chaos Space Marines and didn't encounter a description of anything like this. Can someone please tell me why my Recquisition is disappearing? I don't know if this is your first experience with the DOW series, but degrading requisition has been a common feature since the original DOW game.
It depends how long you've been drawing from a given req site, I think after about 20-30 minutes the degradation starts. Upgrading the outpost will raise the plateau, but not to the level of what it would be for a comparably upgraded site that you've drawn from for only five minutes.
I don't have Soulstorm, but I haven't seen the degradation go all the way down to zero for any outpost in any of the previous games. Is that what's happening here?

IMO, Generals Zero Hour represents the pinnacle of "quick game" RTS. Of all the RTS games I've played (and I've played a lot), none are as quickly entertaining and just plain fun.

| Are 'Act of War' and 'Joint Task Force' from the same developer or
what? Backspace 00:39:09 |
| | I bought JTF from Steam when it was on sale for $9.99 and then a week later I got Act of War for $4.99 from Zellers. The game play in these two games is similar and the interface is almost identical and yet reviews score Act of War quite a bit higher. They are so similar they must have been designed by the same people. The developer names are different though.
