WC40K Soulstorm has Securom7?! DocScorpio 12:23:01
Word of warning: Looks like Relic/THQ has reversed its policy on no-DVD-
in-drive play (as in CoH and Dark Crusade). Soulstorm comes with Securom
protection so after you key in your validation code don't think you can
remove the DVD. There's a fix .exe at GCW, but it doesn't work.

PC games vs Console games Senica 01:30:31
Console games might be great if you want to restrict yourself
to arcade type games and and RPG's but I have never seen a strategy
game that has depth and challenge that a PC game has. If console
game makers continue to crank out more of the same I will still be
content with the existing PC games I already have even if another
new great PC title never comes out.

Why is everybody so secretive about this? Either tell us or don't, but

Only 1 review so far (a 53%), and in that the review said he found these
sorts of games boring.

Bug in HOMM5 - Hammers of Fate Gerry Quinn 13:42:22
I picked up the collector's edition with the HoF and Tribes expansions.
Trying a scenario in which three dwarfs fight to be chief, I found that
my characters runic magic doesn't work at all. He could learn two rune
spells but not cast them, even though he has the resources.

The character has a permanently active 'stun' rune on all armies, and
this does work. Is there a bug concerned with this, perhaps?

[RTS] My little guys don't appear to be working Peter Knutsen 03:59:15
Some time ago (last year), I wrote a post asking about "little guys
working"-themed games, as in "RTS" games with a more complex economy
(not 95% focus on combat).

Since then, I've become fascinated with the demos for Age of Empires III
and Rise of Nations, and I have purchased Age of Mythology, and ordered
Rise of Nations Gold (it should arrive very soon now).

But!

Compared to older games like Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology, the
workers/peasants/peons/villagers are much more stationary. In older
games, they'd move back and forth between the trees and the gathering
building, or the mine and the gathering building, or the farm and the
gathering building.

In newer games, they stand still 85% if not 100% of the time. This
bothers me. They don't appear to be working, even though they are, and
for some reasons that annoys me. They don't look *busy*.

I guess I just like lots of scurrying back and forth. Perhaps knowing
that the little guys are working because I've told them to satisfies
some need within me?

Part of it may also be that in 50% of cases, the little guys are
obscured behind trees or rocks or similar, so that I see only blue
outlines. Largely stationary blue outlines. If they had to move more
(back and forth), they'd be more clearly visible.

RTS designers: I want the little guys to move more.

If you love 4X strategy games and boardgames (both, not one or the
other), you'll love this post-apocalyptic games.
Like Dominion, it won't win the "prettiest game of the year" award
but, like Dominion, it is a work of love, where you have many choices
each turn (and, unlike Dominion, they don't ovewhelm you from the get
go).
Ot has been a long time since I've had the "one more turn" itch
scratched that bad...

(and the demo is perfectly playable)

Recommend a fantasy genre wargame? Peter Knutsen 00:07:48
 What I want:

1. This is the 21st century. I *want* graphics and sound. It doesn't
have to be over-the-top, but I don't want to play anything that feels
like a C64 or PC-DOS game. I want at least "Amiga standard".

2. I want a game about strategy, not magic. Thus I don't want a game
that forces me to play a spellcaster. Playing a non-spellcaster should
be a viable option.

3. I still like the idea of having experience-gaining heroes that lead
"stacks" or "bands" or "armies" of units, though. Ideally spell-casting
heroes should be as viable as skill-based ones.

4. The fantasy genre is filled with creatures and "races" that have
special abilities. I want that to be a part of the game. Special
abilities that matter. Not just some little "Werewolf units get a +3%
strength bonus on the night of the full moon".

5. I want massed units to make a difference.

6. Good AI. With easier Internet access, and reduced usage costs, game
developers more and more often skimp on AI. I can't live with that. I
need a game that is good when I play it alone

7. Reasonable economy.

Okay, what's wrong with Warlords III: Dark Lord Rising? It seems to fit
many of the above points, so why am I not still playing WL:DLR?

1. No complaints there (except you have to make do without the fancy
cursor on Windows XP).

2-4. No complaints here either.

5. Warlords III:DLR falls *loudly* here. A few units have the "rare and
special" ability to "band", so that they grow stronger if there are
several, but the basic combat model, which is how it works for 95% of
unit types, is mano e mano, and that's not realistic. I'd like 3
Minotaurs to be stronger than 1 Minotaur, and Warlords III doesn't deliver.

6. Warlords III isn't doing too well here, either.

7. The unit building system is stupid. Units take 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 turns
to build, but if your city is "enhanced" by a blacksmith this drops to
1, 1, 2, 3 or 4 turns, thus massively encouraging you to build the "most
time-consuming" units. I'm not impressed. I'd much rather live with a
little complexity, as in Civilization, where you accumulate "build
points" towards project completion. Oh, and instant city upgrades aren't
fun either. I'm also not happy about being able to mix wildly different
units, so that I can make my cities build both Elven Lords and Minotaurs
and Siege Engines and... some kind of undead unit. I'd like to be forced
to select one unit set, but with all available unit sets being eminently
playable (many of the standard unit sets in DLR lacked the Siege Engine,
which for me makes a huge difference).

That said, there are a lot of things that I like about Warlords III. I
like the special abilities of units and heroes. Instead of tiny
percentage bonuses, you get large, significant, visible effects.

I also like the way the game models Morale vs Fear, Leadership vs Chaos,
and Siege vs Fortification.

I don't like the model of archery, though, and light cavalry doesn't
seem to be notably faster than infantry. Also, cavalry doesn't give any
special bonuses against all-infantry enemies.

I like the heroes for the most part, but some things are stupid. Bards
are better than Generals, for instance, since Bards can buy both +1
Morale and +1 Leadership for 1 point each, whereas Generals have to pay
2 points for +1 Morale (Generals get other abilities, but those are less
desirable. I'd prefer to have just one General, to get
super-Engineering, and then a bunch of Bards to lead my war stacks).

I think terrain should have mattered more. I know that some units get
speed or combat bonuses on some terrain types, but apart from City
terrain (I *love* those minotaurs!) it never mattered.

As I said above, massed units weren't worth it. I think a much better
model would involve units becoming Wounded and "drop out of battle", but
with most of them recovering one or more turns later. This also makes
Healing magic more useful.

Battlecry III (the only BC game I've played) absolutely sucked. It fails
the "make special abilities significant" test. In Warlords III, putting
an Elven Lords or a Pegasus or a Siege Engine in your stack made a huge
difference. In Battlecry III, nothing really seems to matter, because
it's allo just plus or minus one or two percent. Oh, and of course,
real-time is much less fun than turn-based.

I have Warlords IV, but I've always bounced very hard on it, whenever I
tried to play it. I think part is the interface differing so much from
Warlords III (which I've one-and-off played since late 1997), and part
because the interface is inflexible (I can't zoom out, for instance. At
least I don't know how).

I like complex games, with complex systems (I like, or at least want to
like, Hearts of Iron), but I'm not a skilled strategist yet, so I need
the game to have a wide range of difficulty levels, so that I can enjoy it.

Any suggestions?

Civ4 reveal map Ace 01:47:19
I just bought this game but I haven't had more than 30 minutes to look
at it.

What I want is a cheat to reveal the world, but only to me (single
player only). Let the AI 'discover', I don't like it.

Is their a way I can do this? Either by changing my profile, or by
maybe giving myself 'satellites (or what ever) in the config file.
Also I didn't see a config file at all (it was a quick look).

Thanks, in advance.

(RESEARCH) Which drug(s) for an RTS/FPS player? Vincenzo Beretta 16:18:40
I'm asking this because the issue is coming up in a coming book script I'm
writing (honest! :o) ), and I was a little bit surprised to realize that I
never heard about it before.

However, what (legal, but, more obviously, illegal) drugs could someone who
plays RTS and FPS games take to "improve" his performance? Think of doping,
but, for example, in a "Quake" or "Starcraft" tournament. As I wrote, I was
surprised to realize how, with all the tournaments where you can win fame
and real money out there (and exp. in S. Korea) the problem of doping was
never considered - at least not that know of.

Once I know the drugs I can do research on the side effects etc. for my
story (real world, late 2000s, no SF elements). But the only I thought about
was cocaine, and I'm not even sure that it would do any good.

Thanks for the help!

Galactic Civilizations 2 problem Rodney Somerstein 03:06:17
I am trying to get Galactic Civilizations 2 to run and having problems.
I sent a message to Stardock tech support and still haven't heard back,
so I figured I would post here. This is a brand new retail copy that I
just purchased.

I will put m debug.err and prefs.ini files in the message below this
description. The problem is that I can launch the game with no trouble
at all. Before I disabled the intro movie, it played through with no
problems also. The game gets to the main game menu and then doesn't
register any mouse-clicks. It does seem to sense the mouse moving over
the buttons, but the clicks don't go through so I can't start the game.

I have tried using both hardware and software mouse with no difference.
I have adjusted the resolution in the prefs.ini file and tried windowed
vs. non-windowed mode as well. This is on a laptop, as you will see
from the specs below. It doesn't matter whether I use the trackpad or
an external mouse.

I also run into a problem with Stardock Central in that it does
recognize a mouse-click and then just freezes. I have no problem
running any other games or programs. Even Sins of a Solar Empire
installs and runs (though I haven't had a chance to actually play that
one yet).

Any help anyone can offer is appreciated.

Thanks,

-Rodney

Galactic Civilizations isn't listed there (2003) nor is Galactic
Civilizations II (2006) nor is The Political Machine (2004).
