| Victoria revelations Joseph Nebus 23:41:52 |
| | Ah, so, it turns out there *is* a price to be paid if you're a Constitutional Monarchy and you set a new ruling party against the will of the voters in order to be freed up to achieve some specific aim (typically, for me, in reaping the advantages of Full Citizenship for all peoples in my nation). It turns out this raises militancy among, well, everybody.
Also while in my current game I'm doing very nicely for the United Kingdom as a world power and dominating the globe in a way that Cecil Rhodes would find to be just about enough, I also kind of accidentally without meaning to broke the Monarchy. With luck I can stabilize back into some sort of democracy at least.

Anyone know how to get a local network multiplayer game working? thanks regardless On my manual it says IPX is required for Local Area Network. That means playing locally on a network.(LAN) TCP/IP is meant for playing on the Internet.

| Anybody played Darwinia? Peter Huebner 09:18:22 |
| | I just picked this game up in a sale, since it got good reviews from sites that concern themselves with 'indie' games and out of the way stuff.
Pretty counter-intuitive user interface, but I am slowly getting used to it, gameplay on the whole is pretty straightforward but I haven't managed to get my squads to kill those trumpet-like critters that shoot out virus eggs.
Manual says they are vulnerable close up, but the manual says lots of things (mostly about hotkeys) that aren't quite so in the game .... ?!?
Anyway, I'd be thankful for any suggestions as to what might work.

| New game called Democracy Graham Thurlwell 00:36:45 |
| | A PC game called Democracy has popped up in the UK release schedule, apparently coming out in the next few weeks. The description on Play.com sounds rather like an old game I used to like called Shadow President that came out in 1994.
Play's price is 11.99 (RRP 15.99) so it's in my impulse buy range anyway but I was wondering if any of you guys know anything about it.

| Rise & Fall - Civilizations At War Query Paul Maskell 21:12:34 |
| | Hello,
I know its an old game, but I have a few questions about Rise & Fall - Civilizations At War.
I've been enjoying the demo and it works without any problems on my VISTA machine.
Would the full game also work without problems on my VISTA machine?
Also I've seen PC-CD and PC-DVD versions of the game available. Are there any differences between these two versions?
Thanks.

Well when this NG was created the 'strategic' in its title implied turn-based. That genre is dying, the NG is just following suit.
I don't beleive turn-based will ever die. Sure less games are getting produced that are turn based these days but I wouldn't be suprised to see a revival. Something like that is easy to figure, a market doesn't just disappear for no reason. Then again, maybe the turn-based strategy genre is diminished in part because of its aging following?
In its current form, real-time strategy encourages mouse slinging over thinking. But I think real-time strategy for the masses will eventually produce spinoffs that resemble the best turn-based strategy games. Evolution will include radical interface improvements and probably stuff like being able to train your troops what to do and not to do. An efficient interface makes a huge difference. Turn-based strategy might need reviving, but also possible is that a revival becomes unnecessary because real-time strategy matures first.
These are still plenty of us out here looking for good turn based games. -- Jan Hyde

On Dec 15, 3:55 pm, ripper234 <ron.gr...@gmail.com> wrote: My take on the future of RTS games. Let me show you how to use Usenet: heheh unfortunately, you're probably talking to a spambot.
Future of Real Time Strategy I think RTS games are currently wrong. What do I mean by that? The interface. Strategy is different than action. For most, a better name might be AS meaning Arcade Strategy, or whatever name besides RTS.
In my opinion, the major property that separates computer strategy gaming RTS from old-fashioned board strategy gaming is the fact that the computer arbitrates who gets to a particular location first. And consequently there's a click-fest to get there first.
Current RTS games do test strategy and tactics, but they also require a high degree of micro-management. Top Starcraft players are measured by their APM, and a player with high thinking skills but a less than agile hand is at a disadvantage. The anticipatd Starcraft 2 doesn't seem to hold great promise to change this. What I want is this: In addition to the point-and-click action we all know (and love), I want RTS games to offer me strategy/tactics menus. I want to be able to order the computer AI
Such commands should be easily programmable in the game as it ships. Special player-made commands could be added before and during a game. The player's major role should be to select and define strategies, not to gather up individual drones to build structures or to micro-manage an attack. Of course, as I said, the micromanagement can stay, but it must not be how you spend the better part of a game. Note that most of the "strategy commands" I want are probably already present at some form inside the computer's native AI player. As a player, I want to have access to this AI and parts of it. Once this is developed enough, I can imagine different Starcraft tournaments where players are only allowed to pre-program the strategy. Now I wonder how long till these ideas become reality and how difficult it would be to program a extension for the existing Starcraft that accomplishes something like this. One enabler is a good/programmable interface. There is a big difference between StarCraft's and Strategic Commander's interfaces. With StarCraft, you can't get there from here because its interface is designed for arcade strategy. I've tried. You can automate Strategic Commander because it's interface is geared towards strategy gaming.
NaturallySpeaking Professional (expensive just for gaming), a suitable script recorder (like mine), and a lot of computer experience/motivation unlocks the door to real computer strategy gaming even against mouse slingers who do "great micro!" Then again, most of the guys who do great micro are probably playing StarCraft instead of Strategic Commander.
Good luck and have fun.

| Strategic Commander Forged Alliance settings John Doe 06:26:56 |
| | For Forged Alliance, I would like to make another startup file like I had in Supreme Commander. Anybody get me started?
I'm currently looking on their website. It's a group of settings you can put in an INI type file that adjusts the user interface (UI) to your liking. In Supreme Commander, you could invoke a console to find dozens of commands that affect the user interface. Those commands could be put in the startup file to automatically run when the game starts.
The mod manager is used to invoke the startup file. I will add to this thread whatever I can find.
Thank you.
