So how is Space Empires V these days? Bp 18:33:00
 I used to play a lot of Space Empires IV, not so much online, more
either solo against AI or with me and my kids against AI on our LAN. I
still like the game, still have it on my HD and fire up a game now and
then, but the stupid AI just makes a game boring once I get past the
initial exploration/coloniz­ation and setting up of defenses.

I never bought Space Empires V, just heard some negatives when it
first came out and didn't see any reason to switch. How is it now,
after a few patches? How is the AI? What is different from Space
Empires IV, other than graphics?

During the 1998-2000 period my records indicate that I sent at least 14,480 faxes to the British Parliament
in Westminster, of which 9,138 went via TPC's email-to-fax service and 5,342 were sent via fax-modem direct from
my computer. The actual figure is obviously much higher since, for most of this period, whenever a recipient asked to
be deleted from my mailing list, I totally wiped all entries including that from the logfile.

In the records "Y" indicates successful transmission from fax-modem, "N" indicates failed transmission from fax-modem.
"E" indicates an error occurred while transmitting via fax-modem and a fax may have been only partly transmitted.
"y" and "n" indicate success or failure via TPC.

In April 2000 I changed the method of operation by recording "R" when a recipient requested removal, rather than
wiping their details from my mailing list and records; and keeping "B" records for when TPC actioned a ban on a
recipient's fax-number, but the recipient did not write to ask me to cease faxing. The purpose of these changes
was to keep more accurate and complete records, but the intention was thwarted by the police complaint.

Universe at War: Earth Assault demo DocScorpio 03:03:53
 A new RTS pc (and console) release (slated for Dec) with three alien races.
They fight each other and Earth is the invaded "3rd world country" where the
fighting takes place. Humans do attack you, but they're kind of like insect
pests.

I tried the demo and even though the graphics, sound effects, and voice
acting are pretty damned good, I don't know if there's enough here to
warrant a buy. Looks like a Sega A-title which will probably go for $50-55
suggested retail.

The demo consists of a really high-quality intro movie and two Hierarchy
faction missions (save function disabled). Neither mission is challenging
and I don't really know that much more about the game after playing them.

One neat thing is the Hierarchy Walker.....an awesomely humongous and
upgradable war-machine, which is kind of like a moving base.

Anybody else tried the demo and have an opinion?

ID this old PC game Peter Knutsen 07:16:18
 Playing the Age of Empires III demo has reminded me of a PC strategy
game demo I played quite some years ago.

Probably in 1996 or 1997, and almost certainly gotten from a cover CD
with a Danish computer magazine, rather than downloaded (at 28.8k, or
more likely 19.2k, I didn't download a lot of demos back then). At
around that time, but quite possibly some months earlier or later, I
also got the Mission Force: Cyberstorm demo, and the Duke Nukem 3D demo.

I don't remember all that much, but it was some kind of new world
colonization game, I'm fairly sure. It was not Sid Meier's Colonization,
though. I've played that one.

This game had a RTS feel to parts of it, but battles were fought
turn-based on some kind of game board, with square tiles. You had
infantry, cavalry and artillery, and maybe some vaguely chess-like rules
for movement.

Outside of battles, you moved an explorer-like character around in a
primitive 3D enviroment, to uncover shrouded land, and if you were the
first to find a land mark, such as a mountain peak, you got to name it.
You obviously had a city or a base, but I can't recall if you could add
buildings inside it, or create military units.

I'm afraid that's all I remember.

Can anyone tell me what this game was called?

Real-time Strategy games David Alex Lamb 02:44:36
 I've almost always avoided anything with 'real-time' in the title
because I'm pretty slow, but one or two games I was thinking about
putting on my Christmas list say they're in this category.

I'm having a bit of trouble picturing what an RTS would be like. Can
anyone give a simple summary? I've played several 4x TBS games,
primarily Civ, so you can assume I know about that kind of strategy game.

I am looking for a compuer game that i can play between multiple

"Strategic Conquest", and would almost be satisfied with it for this

 If anyone is interested in a educational/softwar­e development challenge
Tactical Neuronics (known for A.I. Wars games) has a free game available
called Fortress of Flags. It has a version called A.I. Sandbox which uses
XML to interface with a game controller harness that you create yourself.
The object is to develop a challenging A.I. to compete with a human player.
The game is similar to Stratego. A harness library will allow you to share
your work with other developers and for casual players interested in playing
against your A.I.'s. This is completely free to both developers and players.
You are free to develop the harness in any language you wish and educators
are encouraged to consider it as a learning tool. As I said before, it is
completely free to anyone interested!

 Anybody else irritated on their update policy?

Here I am and just want to play a offline game and I am forced to
download some patch, but the patch so slow that I need to go to some
other site to download. After waiting 10 minutes in queue I finally
got the patch and now it works.

Hrmph. OK I can understand for notion of having all clients on the
same version number but come on, let it only be if you want to play
online. Not by offline games.

Paraworld mission points problem Mario 13:39:08
 In first mission I collect all of 3025 points for quests, but before second
mission when I can buy units for that points I have only 595 out of 3025
points :(­ is this a bug or what is the problem (point :)­ Game version is
1.0 but as far as I know patch 1.01 doesn't fix anything like that (I have
read the release notes).

 Well, my threads were purged so I lost the original post.

I believe someone had posted what we thought could be the 'Best' RTS. My
apollogies if it wasn't.

Anyway, if indeed it is considered an RTS my vote goes for Dungeon Keeper
2. To this day I still play it. It may not be the most complex RTS but it
sure is entertaining, and thats worth more than all the bells and whistles
in todays releases in my book.

Simcity 3K Unlimited - Ambient sound not working Mike S . 02:23:42
 For some reason, the ambient sound is not working in this game. My
cities are all very quiet. The sound effects and music work fine. I
tried googling for anything about this but nothing came up. Anyone

The First Decade? What was wrong with that? Worked fine for me.
(laugh) You're a vast vast vast minority.

There were some embarassing issues at launch, like missing parts or
something, but IIRC a couple of patches fixed those. Having bought it some
months after I played the patched version (not all the games I must admit)
and I found it fine.

I just read the World In Conflict review at tomshardware. I've never
tried what they call a "neo-RTS" title, and I was intrigued. It
doesn't look like much in the way of strategy, but seems to borrow
heavily from Company of Heroes - which is no bad thing.
Anyway, what struck me after reading the review was that it must have
pretty near zero replayability, for single player. I mean, the same
campaign with the same missions in the same order every time? No
options to start with different strengths or weaknesses, no branches

Russians and complete the invasions of Europe and the US. There wasn't
