| | I'm looking for a 2-channel or 4-channel KVM switch for use with DVI video. 1600x1200 resolution would be good. 1920x1200 would be even better.
Any recommendations for models or brands?

| What is a good display adapter for older pc? Joe 14:41:13 |
| | My mom, was given an older Compaq Pentium 75MHz w/24MB RAM, a Cirrus Logic 5434 with 1MB of video RAM. Hopefully, she'll have a better pc, some time, soon (my own is a crumbling AMD 450MHz with 8MB onboard shared video).
The CL 5434 display isn't good for my moms worsening eyesight The refresh rate runs alright only in 'adapter default' mode which has a screen flutter and lacks picture quality. Using the 'Optimal' or 75 Hz options, the viewable screen shrinks in from the edges, and every so often the monitor screen goes black and then comes back on in a second or two (why, I don't know. The 17in monitor she has, is set to 640 by 480 screen resolution because some displays run larger and in full screen).
What is affordable right now, seems to be to buy a better PCI videocard that is compatible with such older hardware. An 8MB would be great or even a 16MB video adapter, if that's possible. There are several on ebay, but, which one is least likely to cause installation headaches? Can someone here, with knowledge of older systems and video adapters, please suggest a good PCI video card for an old computer such as above?
Thanks, very much.
Cosmo

| swapping primary and secondary dual monitors Kam 04:09:45 |
| | I have a Chaintech video card with VGA / DVI connectors on my Dell PC with Windows XP. I set up dual monitors with one monitor connected to the VGA connector and the other monitor connected to the DVI connector. The VGA monitor came up as the primary and the DVI monitor as the secondary. Is it possible to swap the primary and secondary so that DVI is on the primary? Thanks.

| Video cable for Sony CPD-1302 monitor? Mitchell Spector 10:40:59 |
| | Would anyone here happen to have, or know where to find, a standard VGA cable for the Sony CPD-1302 monitor?
It has a DE-9 female (9-pin) input on the back of the display. I picked it up for its ability to handle NTSC frequency but in the meantime I'd like to simply test it.

| Can I put an AGP 8x Video card in an AGP 4x motherboard slot? Stephen Clark 22:36:35 |
| | Hi, I would appreciate some guidance. I have an oldish Intel D850MV motherboard which I believe has an AGP 4X slot. I need to run a Windows XP application which requires Directx 9.0b. All the video cards I've seen which say they support 4X/8X are only DirectX 8.1 compatible whilst all the ones which are DirectX 9.0 compatible say the requirement is for a motherboard with an AGP 8X slot.
Can I buy a DirectX 9.0 compatible AGP 8X video card and slot it into my AGP 4X motherboard?
I know I wont get the full 8X performance but for it just to work would be fine! Thanks.

| Re: Problems with ATI X800 and Catalyst Ati_anger 17:31:28 |
| | I have EXACTLY the same problem as GUEST, with and without dual monitors.
I have the x700 ATI PCI-E w/ 256M.
The problem has persisted for months on end. I have tried several driver scenarios. Contacting ATI was useless, I followed all of their suggestions including OS re-install - the problem persists. Once I indicated to them that I had followed all their instructions without any improvement, they stopped responding.
Problem synopsis: -ati2evxx causes monitor(s) to flash, using all resources -once ati2evxx is disabled, SYSTEM begins to use all resources -problem arises spordically, sometimes even several reboots will not solve issue -problem may then disappear for a couple of days -machine is perfectly stable with only generic XP vga drivers loaded
conclusion: ATI really screwed up this driver, they refuse to admit the problem and I suspect that at least the X700 and X800 are effected and perhaps others in the X series of cards from ATI
I'd be really interested to learn if anyone had found a work-around to this problem.
Cheers.

| Character Sets MDA and Hercules Different? Jp 00:16:35 |
| | I recently exchanged the MDA in my IBM PC for a Hercules Graphics Adapter. As far as I can tell it's a first edition model, ie not a Ramfont or the like.
As it turns out, the Hercules character set differs quite a bit from the original MDA set, especially the character representations for the <32 ascii codes, regularly used by various programs to 'fancy-up' their screen interfaces.
Anybody know if the character sets are supposed to be 'incompatible'. Not according to the original Hercules manual. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Could I, for example, exchange the character roms on the cards, or do they contain instruction code apart from the character set?
Any info or advice would be appreciated. Cheers, JP
